The Gift of Life

The Gift of LIfe started off as a personal idea, and grew into a true community project over the course of 5 months. I believe in the power of photography, combined with contextual story, as a medium to improve our community. So to put the money where my mouth is, I began to enrolled people around me into The Gift of Life project.

The Project Idea: Have a group of volunteer local Vancouver photographers to photograph people who have been/are blood recipients.

Message aimed to deliver: See the faces of the people who have benefited from blood donations and how it has affected their lives, and the lives of those they love.

Results hoped to achieve: 1. Raise awareness for the Canadian Blood Services, 2. Inspire people to become blood donors and get them into action.

We have 14 photographs taken by photographers around Vancouver for 14 different recipients. The stories of their lives are an amazing examples on how people triumph over adversities. They also powerfully show how the generous act of blood donation has made profound difference in other people’s lives.

Since the opening of The Gift of Life exhibition at the Little Mountain Gallery, many people who have seen the exhibition have been inspired to donate. The show has been exhibited in the Richmond Cultural Center (April 2010), and the Grind Coffee Shop (May 2010). All the framed prints and stories have been turned over to the Canadian Blood Services Donor Services in Vancouver. If you wish to do a similar project in your area, feel free to reach out to Peggy for a chat.
